Mount Sinai Summer Buddies Recreation Program 2013

North Shore Youth Council’s Summer Buddies Program is a half-day recreation program that provides over 400 students with a safe and fun place to spend part of their summer. Children entering grades K-7 in Rocky Point and K-5 in Miller Place are engaged in both indoor and outdoor activities that foster self-esteem, as well as respect for others. Children are grouped by age and groups consist of no more than 22 youth. It is a character building experience that incorporates the four core values that are at the heart of our mission: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The program serves over 400 children, employs 65 senior counselors and gives approximately 75 junior counselors an opportunity to become mentors. All our counselors are trained as mentors prior to the start of the program. All of our groups consist of two senior counselors and at least two junior counselors.

The children are treated to anti-bullying workshops, bike and skating safety, story time for the younger children, arts and crafts and more. Thanks to the generosity of both communities, we have run a successful food drive for the past two summers and have raised large amounts of food that we were able to donate between various churches and shelters.

We are so grateful to the Rocky Point and Miller Place School districts and administration for allowing us to use the schools and grounds to implement this fun summer program for the kids.
